The journey begins with an escape to the tranquility of Lemonsjøen, a hidden gem in the heart of Jotunheimen National Park. Lemonsjø Lake provides a serene backdrop, with its shimmering waters surrounded by rugged mountain peaks. The evening offers a chance to unwind at Lemonsjøen Mountain Lodge, where you can relax and prepare for your upcoming journey.
On your first cycling day, the route winds through the scenic Murudalen Valley, where rivers Sjoa and Muru weave through lush landscapes. The journey passes alongside Slangen and Olstappen lakes, showcasing crystal-clear waters. At Ruten Mountain Lodge, the day concludes with panoramic views of the Gudbrandsdalen region.
50.8 km and 760 m of elevation gain / 780 m of elevation loss
Today, you’ll ride right through Jotunheimen National Park, full of traditional summer farms and well-maintained roads. After a nice and easy start to the day, you’re in for a challenging climb on the Jotunheimvegen panoramic route. You’ll encounter several glacial lakes along the way before ending the day at Bygdin Lake. You’ll spend the night at a historic mountain hotel right on the lake’s shore.
60 km and 1000 m of elevation gain / 800 m of elevation loss
You have the opportunity to explore more of your surroundings today. You can opt for a short hike in the morning, heading up Synshorn mountain to take in the expansive views of the lake before boarding a ferry to get to the other side. Today’s cycling section is shorter to help you recover from yesterday’s strain. You’ll pedal along the shores of Tyin lake for about an hour before reaching Tyinkrysset, your accommodation for the night.
23.5 km and 170 m of elevation gain / 370 m of elevation loss
After breakfast, you’ll descend from the plateau straight to Lake Vangsmjøse. Riding along the lake, you’ll take a less-crowded path, away from main traffic, so you can experience the true peace and quiet of rural Norway. You might want to take it easy today, because you are in for a somewhat strenuous ascent towards Syndinstøga, located among charming mountain pastures, and the place where you’ll recharge your batteries.
51.5 km and 1100 m of elevation gain / 950 m of elevation loss
Today, gravel roads will take you through idyllic summer farm areas, where the landscape is punctuated by serene lakes and charming cabins. At Vasetvatnet lake, you can stop for lunch at the shore before making your way on to Gomobu mountain lodge for a relaxing evening.
22.8 km and 350 m of elevation gain / 400 m of elevation loss
It’s time to hit the Panoramavegen, an incredible panoramic route past several lakes and historic sites, with constant views by your side. This is considered an off-road section of the Mjølkevegen cycling route, but it is one of the best sections. Storfjorden and Tiselfjorden, two large inland fjords will be the highlights of today’s ride as you make your way towards the cozy, traditional Kamben Mountain Lodge where you will spend your last night of the trip.
35 km and 480 m of elevation gain / 520 m of elevation loss
As your journey on the Mjølkevegen route concludes, you’ll make your way to Oslo after breakfast. Bid farewell to the remote, rural Norway, and catch a bus to Fagernes before taking a Valdresekspressen back to Norway’s bustling capital.
