Itinerary
Your Canal Route journey begins in Lunde. Surrounded by lush landscapes and the tranquil waters of the Telemark Canal, this peaceful town offers a warm welcome with its relaxed atmosphere where you can settle in at your accommodation, enjoy the embrace of nature and prepare for the journey ahead.
Your first cycling stage will take you along the edge of the famous canal. On top of serene waterways and lush forests you’ll be cycling through, the canal offers the opportunity to observe human ingenuity. The canal’s intricate lock systems are on full display today. You’re in for a relaxing ride until you reach the end of Kviteseidvatnet lake, where you’ll ascend to a viewpoint and continue down to Strond, your haven for the night.
52.5 km and 1070 m of elevation gain / 880 m of elevation loss
The second half of the journey will have you cross the Storstraum bridge, taking you to the other side of the canal. From here, you’ll follow the shore of Vråvatn lake, all the way to Vråliosen, where you’ll be greeted by stone bridges before continuing on to Bandaksli. As you reach Bandak lake, you’ll turn left and make your way to Dalen, your Telemark Canal Route finish line.
44.7 km and 555 m of elevation gain / 750 m of elevation loss
After a couple of exciting cycling days, it’s time to bid farewell to Telemark. You can choose to spend an extra day in Dalen, taking a day trip on a boat through the canal you’ve just cycled, or board a ferry that will take you to Skien for your return home.

Stretching 105 kilometers, the historic Telemark Canal, completed in 1892, connects Skien to Dalen and has long been celebrated as a masterpiece of engineering. Its intricate system of 18 locks was designed to navigate the region’s rugged terrain, earning it the nickname “the eighth wonder of the world.”
Today, it provides the perfect backdrop for a scenic and culturally rich cycling adventure.
This carefully planned route allows cyclists to follow the canal as it weaves through serene forests, rolling hills, and traditional villages. Here, you will experience Norway’s natural beauty firsthand, from tranquil lakes reflecting the surrounding landscapes to the majestic cliffs and valleys that define the region.
Along the way, the locks – still operated by hand in some areas – are a highlight, showcasing the ingenuity and craftsmanship of a bygone era.
The cycling path is well-suited for riders of various skill levels, combining paved roads and gravel paths that run parallel to the canal.

The ideal cycling season in Norway spans from mid-May to mid-September. In higher elevations, such as mountainous areas, it’s advisable to schedule your cycling adventures from mid-June to August.
In Norway, tours can proceed in light rain with appropriate clothing. Summers may bring afternoon showers, so beginning your tours early is recommended. If adverse weather conditions are expected, we will make efforts to adjust the tour schedule accordingly.
