From Gothenburg, the Bohuslän coast runs north to the Norwegian border. This tour follows it all the way, then crosses into Norway for the Oslofjord and Oslo. Nine riding days cover 460 km (286 mi) in two countries.

Bohuslän is the granite edge of western Sweden: smooth pink rock polished by the ice, thousands of islands and fishing villages built right on the cliffs. You cross it on bridges and small island ferries, with seafood close by every evening, from the prawns of Smögen to the oysters of Grebbestad. Fjällbacka named its main square after Ingrid Bergman, and near Tanum a detour leads to Bronze Age rock carvings on the UNESCO list.

Across the border at Svinesund, Fredriksten Fortress still stands above Halden. King Charles XII of Sweden was shot there in 1718, and his death ended the Swedish invasion of Norway. The land then softens into the farms and fortress towns of Østfold, where Norway's coastal cycle route, part of the North Sea Cycle Route, leads to the capital.

With a fitness level of 4 out of 5, it suits regular cyclists. The granite brings short, steep climbs on most days, and the hardest stage is the day you change countries. In Bohuslän there is no signed route; quiet back roads link the harbors instead, and an e-bike makes the hills easy.

Every night is a hotel with breakfast, from city hotels to seaside inns, and trains run beside parts of the route if you want a shorter day.

Coming from the south? Highlights of Kattegattleden ends in Gothenburg, where this tour begins. Tell us when you would like to start, and we'll set up your Gothenburg to Oslo ride.

Frequently Asked Questions

Not for most of the way. Out of Gothenburg you ride the line of Västkustleden, a new national cycle route that has no signs yet, and the Bohuslän coast has no continuous signed route at all. In Østfold you join Norway's national cycle route 1. You navigate with the GPS routes we send you.

There are three short crossings:

  • Day 4: two short car ferries, Malöleden and Ängöleden, a few minutes each

  • Day 5: Västtrafik line 847 from Fiskebäckskil to Lysekil, about 12 minutes; you pay on board by card, and bikes travel free when there is space

In summer, yes. Ruter's boat runs from Son to Aker Brygge in central Oslo between late May and late August and passes Drøbak on the way. Only six bikes fit on board, first come, first served, and each bike needs a child ticket from the Ruter app. If the boat is full, the last stage is a 60 km (37 mi) ride along the fjord.

Regional trains run beside the route on days 2, 7, 8, 9 and 10. The most useful one serves the hardest day: the train from Tanum to Strömstad cuts day 7 from 70 km (43 mi) to about 40 km (25 mi). Days 3 to 6 have no train for bikes, but they are the shortest stages.

Yes, but plan its way home. Vy trains between Oslo and Gothenburg take two to four bikes each, so book a bike place early; the bike ticket costs about half the passenger fare.

Yes. On every riding day one suitcase per guest travels ahead to the next hotel, so you ride with only a daypack.

Fly into Gothenburg Landvetter. The airport bus runs every 15 to 30 minutes and reaches the city center in about 25 minutes, a short walk from your hotel.

At the end, the airport express train links Oslo Central Station with Oslo Airport Gardermoen every 10 minutes during the day, in about 20 minutes. A private transfer at either end can be arranged: ask us here.
